Imperfect and pluperfect subjunctive
qu'il fût, qu'il eût fait, qui l'eût cru ?: the literary subjunctive and the «second form» of the past conditional.
Modern French has replaced these forms with the present and past subjunctive. You'll still meet them in classic literature, formal speeches and set phrases, so at C2 you need to recognise them.
Imperfect subjunctive
Built on the 2nd person singular of the passé simple (tu parlas, tu finis, tu fus) + -se, -ses, -sions, -siez, -sent. In the 3rd person singular the -s is dropped and replaced by a circumflex + -t: qu'il parlât, qu'il finît, qu'il fût.
| parler (tu parlas) | finir (tu finis) | être (tu fus) | avoir (tu eus) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| que je | parlasse | finisse | fusse | eusse |
| qu'il | parlât | finît | fût | eût |
| que nous | parlassions | finissions | fussions | eussions |
| qu'ils | parlassent | finissent | fussent | eussent |
Other common 3rd person forms: qu'il fît (faire), qu'il vînt (venir), qu'il pût (pouvoir), qu'il sût (savoir), qu'il allât (aller), qu'il dît (dire).
- Il fallait qu'il partît.He had to leave. (modern: qu'il parte)
- Je voulais qu'elle vînt.I wanted her to come. (modern: qu'elle vienne)
Pluperfect subjunctive
Auxiliary in the imperfect subjunctive + participle: qu'il eût fini, qu'elle fût partie.
Past conditional, second form
The same form is used with the meaning of the past conditional in formal and literary style:
- Qui l'eût cru ?Who would have thought it? (= Qui l'aurait cru ?)
- S'il l'eût su, il fût venu.Had he known, he would have come. (= S'il l'avait su, il serait venu.)
- On eût dit qu'il dormait. You would have thought he was asleep.
- Le nez de Cléopâtre, s'il eût été plus court, toute la face de la terre aurait changé. (Pascal)Cleopatra's nose: had it been shorter, the whole face of the earth would have changed.
