Features of speech

  • Dropped ne: C'est pas grave.
  • Contractions: t'es (tu es), j'suis [ʃɥi], y a (il y a), p'têt (peut-être).
  • Dislocation: Moi, mon frère, sa voiture, elle est super.
  • Question word at the end: Tu fais quoi ?

Features of formal writing

  • Inversion in questions and after certain adverbs (Peut-être est-il…).
  • Nominalisation and impersonal structures (Il convient de…, Il importe que…).
  • Passé simple in narration, ne explétif, imperfect subjunctive (C2).
  • Letter formulas: Veuillez agréer, Madame, l'expression de mes salutations distinguées. (Yours faithfully / sincerely.)
