Neutral pronouns le, en, y and pronominal expressions

Je le sais, je m'en doute, j'y tiens, elle l'est: pronouns that replace whole ideas.

Neutral le

Replaces a clause, an adjective or an idea. It never changes form:

  • Il est parti ? – Oui, je le sais.
    Has he left? – Yes, I know.
  • Tu es fatiguée ? – Oui, je le suis.
    Are you tired? – Yes, I am.
  • Je vous l'avais bien dit !
    I told you so!
  • Il est plus riche qu'on ne le croit.
    He's richer than people think.

En and y with clauses

  • Tu es sûr qu'il viendra ? – Oui, j'en suis sûr.
    Are you sure he'll come? – Yes, I'm sure (of it).
  • N'oublie pas de fermer la porte. – J'y penserai.
    Don't forget to lock the door. – I'll remember.
