Past participle agreement with avoir

Why you write «les lettres que j'ai écrites» and «je les ai vues».

With avoir, the participle normally does not agree: Elle a mangé. Ils ont fini. There is one important exception:

The participle agrees with the direct object when that object comes before the verb.

  • Marie ? Je l'ai vue hier.
    Marie? I saw her yesterday.

    I saw Marie. (object after: no agreement)
