The passive voice
être + past participle, par / de, and why French often prefers «on».
The passive is formed with être in the required tense + past participle, which agrees with the subject. The agent is introduced by par (by).
| Tense | Active | Passive |
|---|---|---|
| présent | Le chef prépare le repas. | Le repas est préparé par le chef. |
| passé composé | Un voleur a volé la voiture. | La voiture a été volée par un voleur. |
| futur | On construira un pont. | Un pont sera construit. |
With verbs of feeling or state, the agent is introduced by de: Il est aimé de tous. La table est couverte de livres.
