The passé simple: the tense of literature

Recognise it in books and articles: il parla, elle fit, ils vinrent.

The passé simple means the same as the passé composé (a completed past action), but it's used almost only in writing: novels, fairy tales, history. At B2 you mainly need to recognise it. Don't use it in conversation.
