Passé composé with avoir

The main past tense, which covers both «I ate» and «I have eaten», and its past participles.

The passé composé describes a completed action in the past. It is formed with an auxiliary verb in the present + a past participle.

Forming the past participle

Negatives and questions

Ne… pas goes around the auxiliary, not the participle:

  • Je n'ai pas compris.
    I didn't understand.
  • Tu as vu ce film ?
    Have you seen / Did you see this film?
  • Qu'est-ce que tu as fait hier ?
    What did you do yesterday?
