Perfect participle and participle clauses
Ayant terminé…, Arrivée à Paris…, Le travail fini…: dense written style.
The perfect participle (ayant / étant + past participle) shows an action completed before the main one, often with a sense of cause. It's mainly written.
- Ayant terminé son rapport, il est parti.Having finished his report, he left.
- N'ayant pas reçu de réponse, j'ai rappelé.Not having received a reply, I called again.
- Étant arrivée en retard, elle n'a pas pu entrer.Having arrived late, she couldn't get in.
With être verbs, étant is often dropped: Arrivée en retard, elle n'a pas pu entrer.
Absolute participle clauses
The participle has its own subject, different from the main clause:
- Le travail terminé, nous sommes allés boire un verre.The work done, we went for a drink.
- Le soleil s'étant couché, il a fait froid.The sun having set, it got cold.
- Les enfants partis, la maison était silencieuse.With the children gone, the house was silent.
