The imparfait vs the passé composé

«I was eating», «I used to eat», «I would eat (every day)» are all imparfait.

Formation

Take the nous form of the present, remove -ons and add -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.

The only exception is être: j'étais, tu étais, il était, nous étions, vous étiez, ils étaient.

  • Quand j'étais petit, j'habitais à Leeds.
    When I was little, I lived / used to live in Leeds.
  • Je dormais quand le téléphone a sonné.
    I was sleeping when the phone rang.
  • Il pleuvait, alors nous sommes restés à la maison.
    It was raining, so we stayed at home.
