The verbs être (to be) and avoir (to have)

The two key verbs, and the expressions that use «avoir» where English uses «to be».

«To be» in English, «avoir» in French

Nationality and profession

With être, nationalities and professions take no article and no capital letter: Il est médecin. Elle est anglaise. (Not «Il est un médecin».)
