False friends
- actuellement = currently, not «actually» (= en fait).
- éventuellement = possibly, if need be, not «eventually» (= finalement).
- en effet confirms or explains what was just said: Il est absent. En effet, il est malade. (He's away; he is, in fact, ill.) It's not «in effect».
- or is not English «or» (= ou). It introduces a new fact in reasoning: Tous les hommes sont mortels. Or Socrate est un homme. Donc… (Now, Socrates is a man…)
- d'ailleurs = besides, by the way; ailleurs = elsewhere.
- Certes, ce projet est coûteux, mais il est nécessaire.Admittedly, this project is expensive, but it is necessary.
- Quant à moi, je reste.As for me, I'm staying.
- Paris est cher ; en revanche, la province est abordable.Paris is expensive; the provinces, on the other hand, are affordable.
