Subjunctive: wishes, feelings, value judgements

Quiero que…, me alegra que…, es necesario que…: when the subject changes.

The subjunctive is used in the subordinate clause when the main clause expresses a wish, a feeling or a judgement, and the two subjects are different.

Same or different subject?

Same subject → infinitiveDifferent → que + subjunctive

Me alegra estar aquí.Me alegra que estés aquí.

Ojalá (from Arabic, «God willing») always takes the subjunctive: ¡Ojalá haga buen tiempo mañana! = I hope the weather's good tomorrow!

  • Mis padres quieren que estudie medicina.
    My parents want me to study medicine.
  • Me molesta que la gente hable por el móvil en el cine.
    It annoys me when people talk on the phone in the cinema.
