Subjunctive: doubt and denial
Creo que + indicative, no creo que + subjunctive.
Expressions of opinion and certainty take the indicative when affirmative, but the subjunctive when negative or expressing doubt.
| Indicative (certainty) | Subjunctive (doubt) |
|---|---|
| Creo que tiene razón. | No creo que tenga razón. |
| Pienso que es caro. | No pienso que sea caro. |
| Es verdad que está enfermo. | No es verdad que esté enfermo. |
| Estoy seguro de que viene. | Dudo que venga. |
With quizás, tal vez, probablemente (maybe, probably): subjunctive for more doubt, indicative if the speaker leans towards «yes». A lo mejor (maybe) always takes the indicative.
