Ser and estar: two verbs for «to be»
Ser for identity and characteristics, estar for location and temporary states.

When to use ser
- identity, name, profession: Soy Emma. Es médico.
- origin, nationality: Somos de Irlanda.
- lasting characteristics: La casa es grande. Es simpática.
- time, date: Son las tres. Hoy es lunes.
When to use estar
- location: Madrid está en España. ¿Dónde estás?
- temporary states and moods: Estoy cansado. La sopa está fría.
- with the gerund (-ando / -iendo): Estoy comiendo.
- Soy inglés, pero estoy en Madrid.I'm English, but I'm in Madrid.
- Mi hermana es alta y hoy está muy contenta.My sister is tall and today she's very happy.
