Reported speech
Dijo que…, me preguntó si…, me pidió que…: tense and word changes.
When the reporting verb is in the past (dijo, explicó, contó), tenses usually «step back»:

| present: «Estoy cansado.» | imperfect: Dijo que estaba cansado. |
| preterite / perfect: «Fui / He ido.» | pluperfect: Dijo que había ido. |
| future: «Vendré.» | conditional: Dijo que vendría. |
| imperative: «¡Ven!» | imperfect subjunctive: Me pidió que fuera. |
- Yes/no questions: Me preguntó si quería café. = He asked me if I wanted coffee.
- Wh- questions: Me preguntó dónde vivía. (with an accent)
- Time words: hoy → aquel día, mañana → al día siguiente, aquí → allí.
- Ana me dijo que había aprobado el examen.Ana told me she had passed the exam.
- El médico me recomendó que durmiera más.The doctor advised me to sleep more.
