Simple past: irregular verbs

Ser / ir (fui), tener (tuve), hacer (hice), estar (estuve) and the unaccented endings.

The most frequent verbs have an irregular stem and special endings without accents: -e, -iste, -o, -imos, -isteis, -ieron.

Ser and ir: the same forms

fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron. Context shows the meaning: Fui a Roma (I went), Fue un día fantástico (it was).

Dar takes -er endings: di, diste, dio, dimos, disteis, dieron.

  • El sábado fuimos a la playa y estuvimos allí todo el día.
    On Saturday we went to the beach and stayed there all day.
  • ¿Qué hiciste ayer? – Nada, tuve que trabajar.
    What did you do yesterday? – Nothing, I had to work.
