The pluperfect subjunctive: hubiera hecho

The unrealised past, regret, and wishes that can no longer come true.

Form: hubiera / hubiese + participle (hubiera, hubieras, hubiera, hubiéramos, hubierais, hubieran).

  • unreal past conditions: Si hubiera sabido la verdad, no habría firmado.
  • regret with ojalá: ¡Ojalá hubiera estudiado más! = I wish I had studied more!
  • after past verbs of wish / feeling, for an earlier action: Me molestó que no me hubieras avisado.
  • como si + earlier action: Habla como si hubiera vivido allí. = as if he had lived there.

In the main clause of a conditional, hubiera may replace habría: Si lo hubiera sabido, te lo hubiera dicho. The reverse (habría after si) is not allowed.

  • Ojalá no hubiera dicho eso.
    I wish I hadn't said that.
  • Me sorprendió que nadie hubiera protestado.
    I was surprised that nobody had complained.
