The pluperfect: había hecho
An action that had happened before another past action.

It shows that something had already happened when something else happened: Cuando llegué, la película ya había empezado.
It's also used for experiences up to a point in the past: Nunca había visto el mar hasta los diez años. = I had never seen the sea until I was ten.
- Cuando llegamos a la estación, el tren ya había salido.When we got to the station, the train had already left.
- Me dijo que no había comido nada en todo el día.He told me he hadn't eaten anything all day.
