The passive and impersonal se
Se vende, se habla, ser + participle and estar + participle.
Passive se (the most common)
se + third-person verb, agreeing with the object: Se vende piso = Flat for sale, Se venden pisos = Flats for sale.
Impersonal se
For general statements with no specific subject, singular verb: Aquí se vive bien = Life is good here. ¿Cómo se dice…? = How do you say…?
Ser + participle
The «textbook» passive is used mainly in writing and formal registers: El puente fue construido en 1900 por los romanos. The participle agrees with the subject.
Estar + participle describes the result: La puerta fue cerrada (someone closed it) / La puerta está cerrada (it's closed).
- Se necesitan camareros con experiencia.Experienced waiters needed.
- La novela fue traducida a treinta idiomas.The novel was translated into thirty languages.
