From 16 to 29 numbers are written as one word (dieciocho, veintitrés), from 31 on with y (cuarenta y dos). Uno becomes un / una before a noun: veintiún años, una casa.

Telling the time

  • ¿Qué hora es? – Es la una. / Son las dos.
  • Son las tres y cuarto (3:15), y media (3:30), las cuatro menos cuarto (3:45).
  • ¿A qué hora…? – A las ocho.

Dates

Days and months take a small letter: lunes, martes, miércoles, jueves, viernes, sábado, domingo and enero… diciembre. Dates: Hoy es el 5 de mayo de 2025. «On Monday» = el lunes, «on Mondays» = los lunes.

  • La clase empieza a las nueve y media.
    The class starts at half past nine.
  • Mi cumpleaños es el doce de octubre.
    My birthday is on the twelfth of October.
