Gender and articles: el, la, un, una
Two genders, definite and indefinite articles, and the contractions al and del.
Every Spanish noun is masculine or feminine, even objects. Learn each noun with its article.

- Usually masculine: nouns in -o (el libro), -or (el color), -aje (el viaje).
- Usually feminine: nouns in -a (la mesa), -ción / -sión (la canción), -dad / -tad (la ciudad).
- Exceptions: el día, el mapa, el problema, el idioma (masc.), la mano, la foto, la radio (fem.).
al and del
The prepositions a (to) and de (of, from) merge with el: a + el = al, de + el = del. They don't merge with la, los, las.
- Voy al cine con un amigo.I'm going to the cinema with a friend.
- El problema del coche es grave.The problem with the car is serious.
