The future subjunctive: hablare

A form that survives in legal texts, proverbs and set phrases.

It's formed like the imperfect subjunctive but with -re: hablare, hablares, hablare, habláremos, hablareis, hablaren · fuere, tuviere, hiciere.

In modern Spanish it is not used in everyday language. You'll find it:

  • in legal and administrative texts: El que infringiere esta norma será sancionado.
  • in proverbs: Adonde fueres, haz lo que vieres. (When in Rome, do as the Romans do.)
  • in set phrases: sea lo que fuere (be that as it may), venga de donde viniere.
  • in Golden Age literature.
  • Si así no lo hiciereis, que Dios y la Patria os lo demanden.
(Oath) Should you fail to do so, may God and the Nation hold you to account.
  • Adonde fueres, haz lo que vieres.
When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
