Word formation: suffixes and compounds

-ση, -μα, -μός, -της, -ικός, and compounds like αεροδρόμιο.

Compounds join two stems with -ο-: αερ-ο-δρόμιο (airport), μαχ-αιρ-ο-πίρουνο (cutlery), νυχτ-ο-λούλουδο. Many are «copulative»: ανδρόγυνο (married couple), γυναικόπαιδα (women and children).

  • Η λύση του προβλήματος ήταν απλή.
    The solution to the problem was simple.
  • Πήραμε ταξί για το αεροδρόμιο.
    We took a taxi to the airport.
