The genitive case: possession

του φίλου, της πόλης, του σπιτιού: «of» and «'s» in Greek.

The genitive expresses possession and relationship, and follows the noun it describes: το σπίτι του Νίκου = Nikos's house.

The genitive is also used for months in dates (πέντε Μαΐου), for «how much / how old» (ένα παιδί δέκα χρονών) and after some prepositions (κατά τη διάρκεια του ταξιδιού).

  • Αυτό είναι το γραφείο του διευθυντή.
    This is the director's office.
  • Η πρωτεύουσα της Ελλάδας είναι η Αθήνα.
    The capital of Greece is Athens.
