Όμως can stand after the first word: Ο Νίκος όμως δεν συμφώνησε. Ωστόσο is slightly more formal and usually starts the sentence.

Δεδομένου ότι δεν υπάρχει απαρτία, η συνεδρίαση αναβάλλεται.
Given that there's no quorum, the meeting is postponed.
Διάβασε πολύ· ωστόσο, κόπηκε.
He studied hard; however, he failed.
