Compound verbs and the internal augment

ανέφερα, παρέδωσα, συνέβη: learned compounds, and colloquial ξανα-, παρα-.

Many learned verbs are formed with an ancient prefix (ανα-, απο-, δια-, εκ-, κατα-, παρα-, συν-, υπο-). In the past tense, if the stress falls on the prefix position, the augment ε- appears inside the verb:

PresentAorist
αναφέρω (mention)ανέφερα
παραδίνω (hand over)παρέδωσα
συμβαίνει (it happens)συνέβη
υπάρχει (there is)υπήρξε
εκπλήσσω (surprise)εξέπληξα
καταλαβαίνω (understand)κατάλαβα (no augment, colloquial)

In the plural, where the stress moves, the augment usually disappears: αναφέραμε, παραδώσαμε.

Colloquial prefixes

  • ξανα- = again: ξαναβλέπω, ξαναρχίζω
  • παρα- = too much: παρατρώω (overeat), παρακοιμάμαι (oversleep)
  • ξε- = un- / out: ξεκλειδώνω (unlock), ξεκουράζομαι (rest)
  • Τι συνέβη χθες το βράδυ;
    What happened last night?
  • Ξαναδιάβασα το γράμμα τρεις φορές.
    I reread the letter three times.
