The simple past (aorist): regular verbs

Έγραψα, διάβασα, μίλησα: stem change, the augment έ- and stress on the third syllable.

The aorist is the Greek simple past for completed actions. It uses a changed stem and the endings -α, -ες, -ε, -αμε, -ατε, -αν.

Present ends inAorist stemExample
-ζω-σ-διαβάζω → διάβασα
-πω, -βω, -φω, -εύω-ψ-γράφω → έγραψα, δουλεύω → δούλεψα
-κω, -γω, -χω-ξ-ανοίγω → άνοιξα, τρέχω → έτρεξα
-άω / -ώ (group B)-ησ-μιλάω → μίλησα, οδηγώ → οδήγησα

The stress always goes to the third syllable from the end. If the verb has only two syllables, an augment έ- is added to carry the stress: γράψα → έγραψα. In εμείς / εσείς the augment disappears: γράψαμε, γράψατε.
